Group discussion  is all about having a discussion on a topic in detail, with taking view of each member of a group. In this every member shares his knowledge with other members in a group. The main objective of discussion is to check the individual ability to participate in a group and to collectively come to a final conclusion.

In GD generally a group of 10-15 members is created. The selection team then gives a topic to the group and candidates are asked to have a discussion on that topic and to make final conclusion. The things that selection team analyses is your listening skills, communication skills, your clarity of thoughts, your knowledge and leadership skills.

The main benefit of discussion is that you can analyze  candidate on many perspectives like you can check leadership skills, communication skills, inter personal skills. It also gives a chance to analyze the body language and listening skills of candidates. On the other hand the disadvantages of this is that you can't evaluate all the candidates in 10-15 minutes. This is also a time consuming activity. Group Discussion is just a elimination round rather than selection round.

Group Discussions can be four major types- Factual, Absurd, Conventional, and Case Studies discussion. However most popular GD Topics are specific based or case study based. For discussions based on case studies you have to provide a detail solution of topic, whereas on situation based discussion you have to analyze the topic in detail. The candidate should have a good knowledge in current affairs, in order to succeed in discussion. To conquer in discussion you have to lead the group with your communication skills combined with your knowledge. You have to make sure that you get completely involved in Discussion. Do not Shout during the discussion. Choose your words very carefully. Listen to others carefully and try to understand the other person opinion, because at last in discussion this is a team work where together you have to solve the problem and find a solution which is acceptable by all the members of Group.
