Common Aptitude Test(CAT)

Introduction:

Common Aptitude Test (CAT) is a national-level entrance exam which is organized every year by the Indian Institute of Management (IIMs) for admission into their Management Programs. The CAT score is used as a criteria for short-listing the candidates who may be further called for a Group Discussion or a Personal Interview or both. Before 2009, CAT was conducted as a paper based test but now It is a Computer Based Test. Apart from IIMs, Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, National Institute of Technology (NITs), Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) and few other institutions also utilize the CAT score for the short-listing process.

Exam Format:

The CAT exam comprises of the following sections:

1.    Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation
2.    Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning.

Each of the above two sections contain 50 questions thus making a total of 100 questions. The duration of the CAT 2014 exam would be 170 minutes. The CAT score is valid for 1 year and there is no restriction on the number of attempts.

Exam Preparation:

The CAT exam is aimed at testing the analytical, quantitative and the verbal abilities of the student. Following are a few guidelines on how to prepare for the exam:

1.    For the Mathematics part, students are advised to have a good practice of everyday maths including topics like Partnership, Time-Distance, Simple Interest, Compound Interest, Number System, Algebra, Sets, etc.
2.    Logical Reasoning section contains puzzles, sequences, groupings, blocks etc. One needs to quickly map out the ‘resources and constraints’ in a given problem to get to the solution quickly.
3.    Verbal section focuses on Sentence Rearrangement, Sentence Correction, Critical Reasoning and Vocabulary Usage. A good vocabulary and reading skills always helps to score well in this section.
4.    In Data Interpretation section- Reading data from given visual representations is the first step. Working mathematically to answer questions based on these is the second step.

Practice Material:

Students need to practice Mock tests and Sample Papers in order to develop a good understanding of the test and its pattern. BULLS EYE is a premier institute which provides one of the best study material for the preparations of various Management Entrance Exams including CAT.

Since CAT is a national level exam, students need to gauge their preparation level by taking a good All India Level Mock CAT test series.
